About Scouting

The Scouting movement started when Sir Robert Baden Powell, a decorated war hero, was asked to write a series of articles to help the Boys Brigade. To help with this he arranged to conduct an experimental camp in 1907 at Brownsea Island in the south of England. Here he tested his theories on a practical basis. This resulted in the publication of "Scouting for Boys" in 1908. This publication caused the creation of scouting patrols that combined into scout troops and scouting was born. Baden-Powell found himself with a full-time occupation organising the new movement.

WHAT IS SCOUTING ?

Baden Powell the founder of the scouting movement stated;

"The objectives of Scouting is to supply games and activities which can promote a boy's health and strength and help to develop his character. These games have to be made attractive for it is through them that we can inculcate the elements of pluck, obedience to rules, discipline, self-control, keenness, fortitude, leadership and unselfish team play".

Scouting is a progressive forward looking organisation designed to serve the needs of young people through their interests and enjoyment.

Some words that sum up scouting are:-
