[Scouts] Triathlon Fundraising 2016-2017

Our Scout troop has a strong history of providing a quality scouting program over many years.  To support this we have worked hard to keep up with the equipment we need to give our kids.  Fundraising for Scouts can be a challenge as sponsorship is limited and we try and avoid asking parents to dip into their pockets as much as possible. Raising this money is vital to the sustainability of the Troop and is what helps make our program one of the best in Victoria.

What are the funds for?
All the money raised goes directly to supporting our Troops program. This includes funding our Tuesday night activities, supporting the Troop Council, buying camping equipment and so much more.  .

How do we raise the money?
We generally limit our fund raising to one method and this is through providing marshals’ for the Gatorade Triathlon Season over each summer.  This falls into two activities:

  • Bag Packing – we provide marshal’s to pack competitor give away bags on the Saturday, typically between 10.00am – 1.00pm.
  • Drink Station Marshals – Sunday triathlon, our job is to hand out water to competitors on the run leg, typically between 6.15am – 11.00am.

It can get pretty hectic at times, but we have a bit of fun along the way also.  We generally have three drink stations with five scouts or family members on each station.  Often Scouts bring a parent(s) or sibling along to help, but if this is not possible we can generally arrange for them to be picked up and dropped home again.

Where does the money come from and how much will we get?
In return for providing the marshals, we receive between $40 – $50 per person.   We also get a bonus if we are able to provide the number of marshal’s we have committed to. Over the last few seasons we have been able to raise over $10,000 for our Troop each year.

What we ask of Scout Families
To make this fund raising work we need the support of all our Scout families.  We all have lots on and we need to plan our weekends carefully.  Can you please review the list of events we will to participate in and register early for the ones you can attend.

And the bonus for your Scout is…
During the 2015-2016 season we returned a percentage of the money raised back to Scouts to help pay for the Jamboree, in the 2016-2017 season, 50% of the money raised will be given back to Scouts as a contribution to the cost of attending our Tasmanian Adventure (up to a max. of $250). The amount each Scout received will be based on attendance at the triathlons.

The co-ordination of our participation in the triathlons will this year be managed by Terry Wilson, a parent from the Troop, who has kindly volunteers her time to ensure we can raise these vital funds.

This your change to pre-register for all of the events for the 2016-2017 season – doing this will help Terry with planning and also means you can ensure you keep the weekends free to help out. Prior to each event Terry will send all those that are registered all the relevant information (and call for additional volunteers if needed).

Terry is also on the look out for someone to assist her with the co-ordination of events so if you’re interested in assisting please let us know.

When the triathlon dates clash with camps we ask parents and other family members to go along and support us at the events so the Scouts can still participate in the camps.
